This course aims to enable participants develop a greater awareness of the issues involved in working with vulnerable people around unsafe sexual behaviours
It explores what sexual offending behaviour is and some of the possible reasons why certain individuals might act in such a manner.
It enables participants to reflect on their own thoughts around sexual offending and discuss how society views such individuals and how this can be at odds with the rights of those who sexually offend.
It considers service responses towards perpetrators and identifies how programmes of work can begin to be developed to support individuals to minimise, reduce and hopefully in some cases stop unsafe and abusive sexual behaviour and maintain an offending free pathway.
This course is designed to enable participants to consider social and sexual behaviour and the impact this might have for vulnerable adults.
It begins with a consideration of what sexuality and sexual expression is and offers the opportunity to reflect on how society in Britain views sexual expression in general terms for all of its citizens before going on to explore what the situation is for people who are vulnerable.
It considers issues around how sexual behaviour and sexual relationships can be supported and the range of information individuals need in order to develop and maintain the relationships and forms of expression they choose.
It identifies what support parents, carers and professionals need to assist those they in turn support to develop a lifestyle meaningful to them.
It also offers strategies for responding to more problematic methods of sexual expression as well as examining ways of dealing with awkward and difficult questions and requests.
This course is designed to enable participants to explore what self-harm is and why certain individuals might use it and what it means to them.
The content considers issues for those supporting people who self-harm and the wider implications for services and how this can impact on individuals who use self-harm.
It explores immediate responses to instances of self-harm and also the support individuals need in the medium and longer term to address the reasons for their use of self-harm.
The course is very much focussed on looking behind and beyond the self-harm - i.e. not seeing the behaviour as the primary issue - and raising awareness that it is more of an indicator of how an individual is experiencing a wider range of issues in their lives.
One of the most vulnerable times for people with profound physical and cognitive disabilities is when they are supported with their intimate care provision. This is an important, topical issue, primarily in the light of very recent, public sexual abuse cases over the last decade. It has led to the #MeToo movement. The subject of 'maleness' and 'toxic masculinity' includes not only male sexual behaviour but also how men are socialised in the concept of 'masculinity' and the impact this has for their ability to express their emotions and deal with mental health. This has a significant impact on the role of the male carer and how, in light of the above issues, men are held to a different level of scrutiny than their female counterparts.
The course also explores the experience of many young people, who are in care settings, who may well have had negative experiences of male role models in their lives and how this can impact on building relationships with male carers.
This is not a course about vilifying men or about telling men what they can or can't do. It is ultimately a celebration of the importance of good male carers and a forum to explore issues of safe care for male workers by:

It identifies what support parents, carers and professionals need to assist those they in turn support to develop a lifestyle meaningful to them.

An opportunity to think about the impact we have on those we support and how some simple steps can reduce escalations of behaviour
It is a reality that we all experience challenges and frustrations as a result of our environment, other people, noise, sensory influences etc. and this is as true for those we support as ourselves, we are often just unaware of the more subtle or low level triggers which can in themselves drive more significant triggers.
Small steps can reap big rewards and this short course offers a time for reflection and discussion to consider both larger service change and specific changes for individuals.
